Got a question? Hit up Toehider at Formspring!
Q. Are you nuts?
A. I guess.
Q. I bought the first Toehider EP, and the song "Toehider" cuts out at the end!
A. It's intentional. I thought it'd be a cool way to abruptly end the madness.
Q. You know people have tried this sort of thing before, right?
A. Well, it wasn't until I mentioned the idea to Salty that I sniffed around on Google and discovered that people have done this. Jonathan Coultan seems to be the most prominant, but see his venture was "a thing a week", which amounts to four songs a month, roughly. My EPs will contain six songs. So, by that logic, that makes me precisely two songs cooler than Jonathan Coultan.*
Q. No, seriously, why are you doing this?
A. Many reasons. Firstly, I write all the time, whether I like it or not. It seems a very stupid thing to say, but if I don't allow a song or idea to escape, it festers in my head and continues to haunt me while I try to sleep. I have song lyrics that have rotted away inside my skull since I was about nine or ten. Finishing a song allows me to put it to rest in a way, it helps me move on.
The second reason is, to help me keep off the sauce. I've been undergoing some major changes in my personal life this year, and I've probably been hitting it a little too hard. So keeping busy and active musically seems a better solution.
Thirdly, why not?
Q. So is all this stuff a collection of older material?
A. Some yes, but most of it will be written as I go along.
Q. Wait, is there going to be a live Toehider band?
A. There is! "Toehider: The Live Stage Show Bonanza" will be hitting Australian stages around August 2009 hopefully.
Q. So how the hell are you going to choose material for the live band?
A. At least for the first year, the band will perform the first EP, with a few additional tracks that are in that heavy rock vein.
Q. Weren't you in that band Template?
A. Yeah.
Q. Were you the ugly one?
A. Uh... nah.. nah... I was one of the hot ones. I think I was the bass player...
Q. So what's going on with Template?
A. Template will still go on as far as I'm concerned, when the opportunity is there for the three of us to get stuck back into it, I'm all for it.
Q. ...but all these Toehider EPs will sound like the first one, right? RIGHT?!
A. Well, no... some of them will be acoustic, some will have no words, some will be orchestral-type things, some will be blatently commercial, some will be heavy, etc.
Q. Ah that's cool, doing the same thing over and over is lame anyway.
A. I know, right?
Q. I don't reckon you're going to be able to do it. 12 EPs in 12 months? Pfft, yeah right.
A. A fair point. That's why if I haven't got it ready by the 12th of the month, you can have it free! It's pretty straightforward.
Q. What if you die from stress during the making of these EPs?
A. Then hopefully Salty and Bradley can cash in on it.
Q. Ok, I think you're awesome, how can I help?
A. Easy! By pre-ordering all this stuff, you can make my task that little bit easier. Plus you'll get "Toehider: A Best of Collection" series one and two on CD, as well as a "Toehider Adventures!" limited edition comic book at the end of the 12 months. Rad, huh?
*I'm joking, I actually dig Coultan a lot.
